According to the most comprehensive study ever conducted on the subject, bad diet is a factor in one in five deaths around the world. The study was based at the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington and Global Burden of Disease, and compiled data from every country in the world.
They also found that High blood glucose levels contribute to early death because high blood glucose levels can lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, high body mass index (BMI) which is a measure of obesity, and high total cholesterol. All of these can be related to eating the wrong foods.
Surprisingly, the study found that eating a lot of red meat is not as big a risk to health as failing to eat whole grains! “We need to look really carefully at what are the healthy compounds in diets that provide protection,” Dr Christopher Murray, IHME’s director told the Guardian. “It is amongst the really big problems in the world. It is a cluster that is getting worse.”
It seems as though millions of people are mistakenly eating the wrong sorts of food in order to achieve good health. Eating a diet that is low in whole grains, fruit, nuts, seeds and fish oils and high in red meat, salt, sugar, and trans fats raises the risk of an early death, according to the huge and ongoing study.
Eating foods that are high in nutrients and fiber can prevent rises in blood sugar levels. Foods like stone ground bread, cooked and raw veggies, fruits, berries, and beans contain lots of vitamins, minerals, and fiber which give the body what it needs and keep blood sugar levels stable.
Good food combined with a diet free of sugar, artificial sweeteners, red meats, and trans fats can go a long way towards fixing the current global health crises.
